Who would have thought that a big watch company such as the Elgin Watch Company
could come from the mid-West? A few determined souls with a dream to chase started Elgin in August of 1864. Otherwise known as "The National Watch Co", the Elgin Watch Company's factory site started making Elgin Watches in Elgin Illinois.
Elgin Watch
It wasn't until around 1850 or so that watches began to be made by machines and Elgin took advantage of the new technology to pioneer a way to produce high quality pocket watches using non-human techniques. Elgin Watch parts were machine made and easily interchangeable which allowed Elgin to sell and repair their timepieces relatively cheaply, giving them a competitive edge. The first Elgin Watch was the B.W. Raymond model and over the course of the following century, Elgin managed to produce some 60 million Elgin Watches. Unfortunately, what could have been more, simply could not survive past its 100 year mark and Elgin closed its doors in 1964.
Elgin Watches
The rights to the name "Elgin" were sold and so Elgin Watches produced after 1964 have no connection to Elgin or the Elgin Watch Company. Today, it has become quite popular to collect Elgin Watches and, fortunately for all enthusiasts and watch connoisseurs, Elgin produced so many Elgin Watches and so many spare parts, that they can still be easily bought and fixed. If used with care, even a 100 year old Elgin can be used on a daily basis. While mechanical Elgin Watches can't compete with quartz watches for accuracy, there is something about having a vintage Elgin Watch that ticks that a quartz watch just can't replace.
